新しい文法はないので、

ここもざっくり読みで進めていきます。

いきなりフレーズ読みからいきます。

というか、今回は読みのみにしておきます。

<Part 1>

Mary lived メアリーは暮らしていました

in the country. 田舎に。

Ben, her neighbor, 隣人のベンは

was a good friend. よい友人でした。

One day, ある日，

they found a cow. 2人は牛を見つけました。

Ben:

Hey, おや，

that's my cow. あれはぼくの牛だ。

Mary:

No, いいえ，

that's my cow. あれはわたしの牛よ。

Ben:

Mary:

the same short legs　　同じ短い脚が

Ben:

No, Mary. 　　　　違うよ、メアリー。

the same long, 　 同じ長くて

black tail 　　　 黒いしっぽが

as my other cows. ぼくのほかの牛のように。

It's mine.　　　　それはぼくのだ。

Mary:

What 　　　　　　　何を

are you saying? 　 言ってるの？

It's my cow!　　　それは私の牛よ！

(After this little fight, 　（このささいなけんかのあと，

<Part 2>

A week passed. 　　一週間が過ぎた。

Someone knocked 　誰かがノックした

at Mary's door.　 メアリーの家のドアを。

Mary:

Hello. 　　　　こんにちは。

Who are you?　 どなたですか。　

Pat:

Hello. こんにちは。

I'm わたしは

a travelling carpenter. 旅する大工です。

Please call me 呼んでください

Pat. 　　　　　 パットと。

I'm looking for 　探しています

work. 　　　　　　仕事を。

Do you have 　　ありますか

any work 　　　 仕事は

for me?　　　　 私の？

Mary:

Yes, Pat.　　　 　そうね，パット。

Look at 　　　　　見てちょうだい

that small stream 小川を

over there.　　　 あそこの。

Ben, my bad neighbor,　ひどい隣人のベンが，

made it 　　　　　　　 あれを作ってしまったのよ

last week. 先週。

Pat:

Oh, 　　　　　　　　 おやおや，

you sound so angry.　だいぶお怒りのようですね。

Mary:

Can you make 　　　　作ってもらえるかしら

a big fence 　　　　 大きな垣根を

along the stream? あの小川にそって

I don't want to see 見たくないのよ

his face. あの人の顔を。

Pat:

OK. 了解しました。

No problem. いいですよ。

<Part 3>

Pat worked パットは働きました

hard and fast.　熱心にそして速く。

At sunset, 　　　　　 日の入りのころ，

he finished his work. 彼は仕事を終えました。

Mary came 　　メアリーが来ました

to see it. 　 様子を見に。

She was very surprised.　彼女はとても驚きました。

Mary:

What's this?　　　これは何なの？

Pat:

Well, 　　　　　　ええと，

I built a bridge 橋をかけたんです

over the stream. 小川に。

Mary:

Why did you do that? なぜそんなことをしたの？

Take down this bridge 取り壊してちょうだい

right now. 今すぐ。

(Then 　　　　　　　　　　（すると　　　　

the door of Ben's house 　　ベンの家のドアが

opened, and 　　　　　　　　開き，

Ben came out 　　　　　　　 ベンが出てきました

of his house.)　　　　　　　家から）

Ben:

Wait! 　　　　　　　　待て！

Don't take it down!　 取り壊さないでくれ！

<Part 4>

Ben ran 　　　　　　　　　　ベンは走って

across the bridge 　　　　　橋を渡り、

and came 　　　　　　　　　 やってきた

to talk to Mary.　 　　　　 メアリーと話しに。

Ben:

I'm sorry 　　　　ごめん

about the cow, 　 牛のことは

Mary. 　　　　　　メアリー。

Please take it back, 　それ（＝牛）を連れ帰って

and be my friend 　　　友達になってよ

again. 　　　　　　　　また。

I don't want to lose 　失くしたくないんだ

your friendship.　　　 ぼくらの友情を。

Mary:

Oh, Ben. 　　　　　　　ああ、ベン。

I don't want to lose 　失くしたくないのよ

yours, either.　　　　 私も。

Pat:

Well, 　　　　　　　　さて、

the bridge worked!　　橋が役に立ちましたね。

You both 　　　　　　　ふたりとも

look very happy.　　　 とてもうれしそうです。

Mary:

Thank you, Pat.　　　　　ありがとう、パット。

You built 　　　　　　　 あなたは作ってくれたわ

a "bridge" between us.　 私たちの「橋」を。

Ben:

Yes. 　　　　　　　　　ああ。

Please stay here, 　　 ここにいてくれないか、

Pat. 　　　　　　　　　パット。

We have 　　　　　　　あるぞ

a lot of work 　　　　仕事がたくさん

for you.　　　　　　　君の。

Pat:

Thank you, 　　　　　ありがとう。

but I can't.　　　　 ですが無理です。

I have 　　　　　　　あるんです

many other bridges 　たくさんの橋が

to build.　　　　　　作るべき

(He left　　　　　　　彼は去った

with a smile.)　　　　微笑んで。

こういう、「仲をとりもつ人」
